The Early Years

The mention of Cupid typically conjures up images of a cherubic infant wielding a bow and arrow, but this wasn’t always the case. Long before the Romans adopted and renamed him—and way before his association with Valentine's Day—Cupid was known to the Greeks as Eros, the handsome god of love.

How He Evolved Over the Years

Over the years, many different stories and legends were told about Cupid. Stories such as his mother (Aphrodite), becoming jealous of the beautiful mortal Psyche that she told her son to induce Psyche to fall in love with a monster, to 19th-century Victorians associating cupid with Valentine’s Day and the concept of spreading love with the cherubic version of Cupid on Valentine’s Day cards which is a trend that persists to this day.

How Cupid Became Legendary

Cupid was responsible for getting Santa and Mrs. Claus to fall in love before they became legendary figures. Later on, Santa heard the story on how Cupid played a role in their relationship and the two became close friends. Santa asked Cupid to join the Legendary figures back when the group first started.

Activities Today

Cupid spends the first part of February every year up at the North Pole and throughout Santa’s Village. After Valentine’s Day, he circles around the globe looking to help make relationships start or even last longer. He does not have a specific place where he lives, but he calls Earth his home.
